Carrick travelled to Galway last Saturday for the inaugural NUI, Galway Head of the River and it turned out to be an extremely successful day for the club. We did not know what to expect going into the Head as Ronan was coming back from injury, Mark B & Jason had only formed their double in recent weeks, Dympna was making her competitive debut for Carrick and her partnership with Jutta Greve from NUIGBC in the double scull had yet to "get wet" to put it mildly.

First up was Mark B & Jason in the double and although setting off from down the starting order they managed to fight their way through the field to eventually take second place behind Commercial RC in the Mens Open Double Sculls, an excellent achievement in their first competitive outing together.

Next up was Ronan who was making his long awaited comeback to racing after injury. Again, Ronan had to contend with starting well down the start list but as like Mark & Jason before him, he managed to fight his way through the field, passing five scullers along the way to take another excellent fourth place in the Mens Novice Single.

But pride of place has to go to Dympna who ended up rowing all three Heads on the day (a sum total of 30km rowing in one day!!). In her first outing she was a member of the Commercial / Carrick Womens Open 8 that finished in third place. Next up she went in her main event, the Womens Novice Single. She received a good starting spot due to her performances last season and stormed her way down the course to win the event by 7 seconds over her nearest rival (despite being hit by four other boats on the way down and also having a slight difference of opinion with a course bouy along the way). In the final Head Dympna teamed up with Jutta Greve from NUIGBC to compete in the Womens Open Double Scull. This was their first ever time in the boat together, never mind ever having actually raced it before so to row an excellent race and finish in second place to Tribesmen RC was a great achievement for the two girls.

Well done to Dympna, Mark, Jason & Ronan! I promise i'll have photo's up in the next day or so.....
